How Plasma TV's Work

"Traditional" televisions use cathode ray tubes, in which a gun fires a beam of electrons inside a large glass tube at phosphor atoms at the other end. The electrons excite the phosphor atoms, causing them to light up as pixels. The image is produces by lighting up different areas of the phosphor coating with different colors (red, green, blue) at varying intensities. While this sort of TV produces nice images, physically they are bulky. In order to increase screen size, you have to increase the length of the cathode ray tube. So, a big-screen TV of this sort will take up a lot of room.

Flat panel plama TVs on the other hand, can have large screens and only be a few inches thick. The basic idea of a plasma display is to use tiny fluorescent lights--made up of either red, blue, or green-- to form an image on the screen. Plasma refers to gas made up of free-flowing ions and electrons. When you introduce many free electrons into the gas by exerting electrical current across it, they collide with the gas' atoms knocking loose other electrons. This forms ions (an atom with a net positive charge).

In a plasma with an electrical current running through it, negatively charged particles are rushing toward the positively charged area of the plasma, and positively charged particles are rushing toward the negatively charged area. While the particles are bumping into each other, these collisions excite the gas atoms (xenon and neon) in the plasma causing them to release photons of light. Most of light released is UV light, which is invisible to the human eye. BUT this UV light can be used to produce light in the visible spectrum.

HD Models with 100Hz Double Scan, Superb Image Quality and Advanced Networking Capabilities

A PDP driven at 50 Hz causes an annoying flicker due to a shortage in the number of pictures displayed per second. Therefore, each picture is displayed twice as if the PDP is driven at 100Hz Double Scan, i.e., the number of pictures displayed is increased to reduce the flicker.

Next-generation black reproduction has been achieved by improving the panel production process, incorporating the new Real Black Drive system (a pre-discharge control system), and raising the base illumination. Even in movie scenes where it is difficult to achieve a fine balance of light and dark, VIERA renders images just as the director intended.

VIERA Link allows interconnected operation of various AV devices using only the VIERA remote control, by simply connecting the devices to each other by an HDMI cable. VIERA Link performance has been further enhanced with LUMIX digital camera connection. By connecting a new LUMIX camera that has an HDMI output terminal to VIERA, you can use the VIERA remote to control the playback of images stored on the camera.

It's easy to view photo images with the SD Memory Card slot. Watch and show your photos right after you take them. Simply insert an SD Memory Card into VIERA to display photos on the large screen. You can also choose from among 3 types of background music.

Plasma TV Panasonic TX-P 42G10 Full HD NeoPDP

600-Hz technology lets you view superb full-HD motion and still images with 1,080 lines of resolution. For even greater clarity with motion images, Panasonic uses its own unique image-analysis technology. This technology converts the motion in each scene into data, then optimises the sub-field to display fast-action scenes in full-HD resolution. And each frame is displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous systems, to reduce aftereffects.

VIERA incorporate an improved panel production process and the new Real Black Drive system. A pre-discharge control system, the Real Black Drive system combines with NeoPDP technology to achieve next-generation black reproduction. When you're watching movies, VIERA renders images just the way the director intended, even in scenes where it's difficult to achieve a proper balance of light and dark.

150-inch Panasonic Plasma TV at CES 08

At CES 2008, Panasonic will demonstrate its 150 inches plasma display, the world’s largest, at least until the show opens…

Panasonic has a history leading the Plasma Display industry, oftentimes running neck to neck with Samsung in the display size arms race. This race to build bigger displays won’t continue forever, in our opinion: at 3.5 meters of diagonal, it becomes a little hard to fit in the average living room, particularly in Europe or Asia :)

LG Plasma Myths

One of the most common misconceptions is that Plasma Screens only last about 5 years. Perhaps this was true of some of the very first models, but nowadays you should expect them to last at least as long as conventional TVs.

Another worry is that the gas in a Plasma TV display needs replacing every 2 years. Fortunately this is not true. Plasma screens should not need any additional service to extend the screen’s lifetime.

Our third myth at least has some truth to it. This is that Plasma Screens are particularly susceptible to screen burn - this happens when a image is left in the same place on the screen for too long, like those pesky channel logos, and you’re left with a permanent residue of the offending image - It is true that Plasma screens are more susceptible than conventional televisions (mainly in their first 50-100 hours of use) however, at the time of writing, many models come fitted with a variety of features designed to eradicate screen burn. That said, it is probably a good idea not to leave it on all night and to ensure that the screensaver on your DVD player is switched on.

50 inch Samsung HP-T5064 Plasma HDTV

CNET reviews the Samsung HP-T5064 (Rating: 8/10) and writes;

“The good: Produces deep blacks with excellent shadow detail; accurate primary colors; numerous picture controls; great range of burn-in protection modes; extensive connectivity featuring three HDMI and one PC input. The bad: Glare-reducing screen could be more effective; color decoding desaturates green; some false contouring. The bottom line: The picture quality of the Samsung HP-T5064 places it among the top tier of 50-inch plasma HDTVs.”

50 inch Philips 50PF9631D Plasma HDTV

TrustedReviews reviews the Philips 50PF9631D 50? Plasma HDTV (rating: 8/10) and writes;

“Finally putting the 50PF9631D to work on a few of our favourite sources, we have to admit we felt a touch disappointed with the way its pictures turn out. The main over-riding problem is that there are sometimes quite considerable amounts of noise in the picture…Ultimately the 50PF9631D’s picture flaws suggest that Philips’ core plasma panel technology is perhaps not quite as up to partnering Pixel Plus technology as the company’s LCD technology. But the overall image quality is still solid, and a huge feature count makes sure the set looks fair value at under £2000.”

NewsFactorMag reviews the Philips 50PF9631D 50? Plasma HDTV (rating: 4/5 and writes;

“We were very pleased with the overall display quality from the 1,366 x 768 Pixel Resolution. Plasma is known for high-contrast images with stunning color reproduction, and this model keeps that reputation intact. Audio from this Philips model was very solid. Two built-in 12-watt speakers have digital signal processing, dynamic bass enhancement, and the virtual Dolby Digital sound system. An Auto Volume Leveler and graphic equalizer contribute to a very pleasing audio experience. “

50 inch Pioneer KURO PDP-5020FD 1080p Plasma TV

Some people say that this is the top Plasma TV on the market. Lets look at some reviews.

PCMAG
LCD TVs outsell all other flat-panel HDTV sets by a huge margin, but the image quality from the new Pioneer KURO PDP-5020FD ($4,000 list) plasma may just give the competition a run for its money. The 50-inch set delivers the best picture contrast of any HDTV currently available, and its range of color reproduction and consistent color accuracy are a perfect match for today’s highest-quality HD video material. It also incorporates some of the most comprehensive multimedia file support that I’ve ever seen in any HDTV, and given that it’s also Pioneer’s least expensive 1080p plasma, it’s a shoo-in for our Editors’ Choice award.

50 inch VIZIO P50 HDTV Plasma HDTV

This is one of the best Plasma TV’s on the market today. Check out these reviews.

Sound and Videos Mag
HDTV looks just like its 42-inch sibling, which we reviewed in our May 2006 issue. Like the P42, it has a built-in tuner for pulling in over-the-air digital TV broadcasts, and there’s also Faroudja DCDi for deinterlacing duties. A relatively sturdy (for a 50-inch model) plastic stand comes with the TV, and you can order Vizio’s optional $90 stationary wall-mount, or a tilting version for only 10 bucks more — a good deal either way you slice it.

Inputs on the P50HDTV include not one but two HDMI jacks (the standard on new bigscreen HDTVs these days, but still surprising on a budget model), a VGA connection for hooking up a computer, and component-, composite-, and S-video jacks. There’s no CableCARD slot for tuning in encrypted premium-cable channels without a separate cable box, but you can receive both regular analog and unencrypted digital cable by plugging into the set’s antenna input.

Vizio’s remote control is sturdy and has a clean button layout. The buttons are small, however, and there’s no backlighting, making it hard to locate a specific control when the lights are dimmed. Picture-in-Picture, Freeze, and Zoom controls are grouped at the remote’s bottom, and directly above them is a set of five direct-input keys for switching sources quickly — a useful feature. The Wide button lets you toggle between the TV’s Normal (4:3), Full (16:9), Zoom, and Panoramic display modes, all of which can be selected for both standard and high-def signals (except Panoramic, which is available only for 480i programs).

42 inch LG 42PC1D Plasma TV

TrustedReviews has reviewed the LG 42PC1D - 42inch Plasma TV (rating: 8/10) and writes;
“If you’ve managed to squirrel away £1,000 for your next TV, you were probably thinking the best you’d be able to get with it would be a decent 32in LCD TV. Happily, LG has other ideas. For while most previous sub-£1k 42in TVs the market has seen have been more or less pants, LG’s 42PC1D looks great, performs decently, and offers features and connections galore. Looks like those lovely Koreans have rewritten the TV pricing rule book again…”

LG 50PS60 50”

Up for review: LG 50PS60 Plasma HDTV. The LG 50PS60 is part of LG’s 2009 Plasma TV line-up. Although it does not have the salient features of the upgraded PS80 series, it still has the LG technology to be proud of. The slim and streamlined design gives an aristocratic look to the HDTV. And to add to it, LG provides an option for using different frame colors to blend with the ambience of your home.

The image quality is greatly enhanced and fine details of the images come to the forefront. There is a promise of superb black levels to make the pictures stand out. The brightness is 1000 cd/sq.m which is more than enough for brilliant pictures. The LG 50PS60 also features 600 Hz Smooth Motion technology which takes care of blurring and image judder. LG 50PQ30 50”

Up for review: LG 50PQ30 Plasma TV. The LG 50PQ30 is a great entry level plasma TV. It has a classsic look with a black casing and slim profile. Although not in the same category as the LG PS80 series, the LG 50PQ30 is great for most HDTV viewers. This set fails to impress the HDTV aficionados with only 720p resolution. But, a lower resolution means a lower price which spells happy shopping for most consumers. Besides, 720p resolution is enough to see good quality images without much noise.

Reviews show that along with 720p resolution, the LG 50PQ30 has 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. This means all the modes can be seen with clarity. This HDTV also sports a great dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1. Pictures will be crystal clear with vivid color and high brightness. Even if you watch movies in a dark room, the images will be optimized to suit your eyes.

LG 42PQ30 42”

Up for review: LG 42PQ30 42-inch Plasma TV. The 42PQ30 is designed for those that want a great bargain TV but still want the quality of one of the biggest electronic name brands, LG. The 720p resolution is the most noticeable difference between this HDTV and others. 720p is still high definition but not as high of resolution as 1080p which is available on other HDTV’s. The conscious customer will get a huge plasma TV for a minimal price.

A review of the LG 42PQ30 shows that it offers a dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 which is fantastic in this range of HDTVs. The pictures are crisp, clear and a treat for the eyes. This set also has a Dual XD engine which makes efficient video processing possible. You will always get a beautiful picture, regardless of the quality of input signal. Brightness of the panel is 1500 cd/sq.m. Intelligent Sensor technology allows for optimal power consumption. The lighting of the room will decide the backlight settings.

Photo viewing and digital music can be brought to you through the USB port. There are 3 HDMI connections for better access to high-definition devices.

Panasonic TC-42PX14 42”

Up for review: Panasonic TC-42PX14 42-inch Plasma TV. Panasonic has released a big range of HDTV’s for 2009 including some great high-end models and some budget priced, minimal HDTV’s. The TC-42PX14 falls under the budget brand and competes price-wise with some lesser known brands and budget brands from other popular HDTV manufacturers. A review of the extra features include Panasonic’s VIERA Link and the VIERA Image Viewer.

The resolution on the Panasonic TC-42PX14 is only 720p, compared to 1080p of most 42-inch Plasma TV’s. Actually, 720p is good enough for all practical purposes. 1080p is featured on some gaming consoles, Blu-ray players and some television channels. Otherwise, most of the TV transmissions are in 720p, so it is unnecessary to pay a higher price for 1080p if you aren’t going to take advantage of it. The other feature that is a little lower than you’d like is the contrast ratio which has been reduced to 15,000:1. This will upset the brightness level in the Panasonic TC-42PX14.

Panasonic TC-42PX14 Features and Specifications Review:

* 42” screen
* 720p resolution
* 600 Hz sub-field drive
* VIERA Image Viewer™
* VIERA Link™
* Over 900 lines of moving resolution
* 15,000:1 native contrast ratio
* Infinite black panel

Panasonic TC-P42X1 42”

Up for review: Panasonic TC-P42X1 42-inch Plasma TV. Panasonic’s 2009 X1 series is built for the budget-minded shopper. It contains some great features and produces a good image but lacks some of the latest additions that most manufacturers are including in their new line-up’s.

The images are quite distinct and clear during fast-action scenes. The resolution of 720p does not interfere much in the picture quality of the HDTV. The 600 Hz sub-field drive is responsible for the clarity and crispness in the images during highly active sports sequences. The fast games available today can be played enthusiastically.

A review of some of the “extras” on the Panasonic TC-P42X1 show the VIERA Image Viewer which allows you to view photos from the SD card slot. You just need to fit your memory card into the slot to see your favorite photos and share it with family and friends. The VIERA Link feature helps you to control all your HD-compatible devices through a single remote. The devices you can control maybe an HD camcorder, a home theater sound system, A DVD recorder or a Blu-ray disc player.

The Panasonic TC-P42X1 has lost out on two key features of the higher-end Panasonic HDTV’s. There is no VIERA Cast and also missing is the Neo PDP panels. The Infinite Black feature improves blackness during dark scenes so you don’t end up with gray scenes. However, there is color quality could be improved.
