Ras Al Khaimah: The Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced a Pakistani man to 10 years imprisonment while his compatriot and accomplice in the October 2008 jewellery shop robbery will be deported after serving a three year jail term.
An Afghan who was also indicted was acquitted. The first Pakistani defendant and another Afghan remain at large and were tried in absentia.
The court also ordered the confiscation of all the tools and equipment used in the robbery, including gas cylinders and hammers.
Court officials said the accused took away eight kilogrammes of gold valued at Dh1 million after they broke into a Damas shop inside a shopping mall.
The Afghan defendant was acquitted after it was proven that while he knew of the group's plot, he had no participation in the execution of the crime.
His innocence was corroborated by the testimony of one of the accused, officials said.
The defendants were arrested after police launched a massive manhunt operation.
Meanwhile, the court sentenced an Indian housemaid to six months in prison to be followed by deportation after she was found guilty of forging official documents.
A court official said the woman inserted her picture on a passport and visa issued for her friend who looks like her.
Inspectors, however, discovered the fraud and the maid was immediately arrested.
The maid allegedly admitted to the crime and exonerated her friend, saying she had no knowledge or participation in the falsification of public documents.
