Council Revs Up Fines For Running Cars Left Unattended

NEW YORK, NY October 29, 2009 —New Yorkers who leave their cars unattended with the engine running will not only risk getting them stolen, they'll now face the possibility of a bigger fine. The City Council approved hiking the fine from $5 to $250. Council Speaker Christine Quinn says five dollars wasn't much of a penalty.

QUINN: It may be the only cheap fee left in the city of New York, and we are going to bring an end to that.

REPORTER: The new law would eliminate the current rule that allows motorists to idle their vehicles for three-minutes.

In January, an unattended delivery van in Chinatown was left in reverse and rolled backwards into a group of preschoolers. The accident killed two children. A month later, a drunk driver in Queens stole an idling car and fatally struck two high school students.
